Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) was an outstanding artist during the turbulent era ravaged by the Thirty Years’ War in Europe. This moving three-part work, Musicalische Eksekvien, is considered one of his most important works, and was written in 1635 in Gera, where he met his employer and lifelong friend. It was written less than two months after humanist Prince Heinrich Postumus Reuss realized his death and commissioned Schütz to compose it. Duke Royce died in December 1635, but his funeral was held on February 4 of the following year. Duke Royce prepared his own funeral with great care, and on the surface of his coffin he contrasted verses from the Bible with lyrics from the chorale (16th century Lutheran writers, including Martin Luther), and contrasted them with the adjacent texts. The relationship was engraved with theological meaning. “A Musical Funeral” is composed of this text that Duke Royce had carved on his coffin.

The whole is divided into three parts,
Tr1-28 Part 1 “Concerto in the form of a German funeral mass” SWV279
Tr29 Part 2 “Motet” SWV280
Tr30 Part 3 “Simeon’s Canticum” SWV281

The first part, the longest of the pieces, was composed to be performed alternately by the SSATTB choir (2 sopranos, 1 alto, 2 tenors, 1 bass) and a small ensemble of soloists. The second part was composed for the double choir SATB & SATB, and the third part was written for the choir and trio of soloists by his SATTB. All movements are accompanied by basso continuo.

The album also features composers who influenced Schutz. Includes works by Schütz’s teachers, such as Giovanni Gabrieli (1554/1557 – 1612) and Count Moritz of Hesse-Kassel (1572 – 1632), who composed the playful dance “Dutch Trumpet Pavane” from which the name derives. It is. Schutz met Claudio Monteverdi (1567 – 1643) while traveling in Italy. His most famous work, “The West Wind Returns and Brings Fine Weather,” has a contrast between the cheerful nature of spring and the sadness of love, and was the inspiration for the church concert “God Is Rising.” and his pupil Johann Schelle (1648-1701), first as a choir boy in the Dresden court chapel and later at the Leipzig St. “Come, Jesus,” he wrote.

This album is a collaboration between the Bavarian Radio Choir, one of the best choirs in the world, conductor Florian Hergert, and a specialized wind ensemble from the Renaissance to the early Baroque. It can be said to be a wonderful feast of early Baroque, revived with new recordings.

Cappella de la Torre is a German wind ensemble specializing in medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque music. Founded in 2005 by Munich-born shawm player Katarina Boiml, it is named after the 16th-century Spanish composer Francisco de la Torre and the Spanish word “, which comes from the story of a medieval bard who played music from a tower.” It was named after “De la Torre” (from the top of the tower). With almost the same composition as the actual music troupe that was active in Nuremberg at the time, it has earned a high reputation as a professional group that practices historical performances, and has won the Opus Classic and Echo Classic awards. Recently, we have been researching and performing new versions of works by unknown composers and masses that add or enhance wind instruments, and have also released a concept album centered on new Renaissance music.
