After having awarded Elon Musk’s SpaceX last year the contract to help bring American astronauts back to the moon within the decade, perhaps as early as 2024, the American space agency is launching a new tender to appoint a second operator to collaborate on the project.

NASA initially planned to declare two winners with the first race, but in the end it had opted for only one for budget reasons. Bezos’ Blue Origin contested the decision but was unsuccessful. Now, even under pressure from Congress which has asked for two operators so that one can take over from the other in case it fails to fulfill its contract, NASA has decided on a second tender.
