Napoli and Barcelona are in sporting turmoil. There will be a crisis duel in the round of 16 of the Champions League.

In the final installment of the Champions League round of 16 first leg, Napoli hosts FC Barcelona on Wednesday. It’s a duel between two struggling masters:
- Napoli is only in 9th place in Serie A, the gap to leader Inter Milan is 27 (!) points.
- Coach Walter Mazzarri had to vacate his post on Monday. Francesco Calzona is the third coach this season to try his hand at the southern Italian sidelines.
- Barcelona isn’t doing much better: third place, 8 points behind Real in the championship. Eliminated in the cup. Lost the Super Copa.
- Coach Xavi will leave the Catalans at the end of the season.
It’s the perfect time to start winning lots of games. In the end we will get something this year.
Nevertheless, big words can be heard from Barça striker Robert Lewandowski. The Pole promised fans victories and titles a few days ago: “It’s the perfect time to start winning a lot of games. And we will win it. Also in the Champions League. In the end we will get something this year.”
Since 2016, however, the Catalans have not managed an away win in the round of the best 16 teams in the premier class. Most recently they failed twice in the group phase. The last triumph in the Champions League was 9 years ago.
Gündogan warns about the opponent
Although Napoli is even deeper in the crisis, Barça midfielder Ilkay Gündogan sees his team as more of an outsider: “Lazio Rome is at the same level in the league and they have now beaten Bayern. Italian teams are always difficult to play in the knockout rounds.”
The last time the two teams met was two years ago. One level lower, the Catalans prevailed in the round of 16 of the Europa League with an overall score of 5:2.
