[Epoch Times, August 13, 2021](Epoch Times reporter Wang Lan reported in Toronto) Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, said on Thursday (August 12) that as the mutant virus continues to spread, the country is In the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Tan said that since the epidemic model was updated two weeks ago, the number of new cases across the country has gotten worse.

“We have been closely monitoring the increase in COVID-19 activities across the country. The latest national surveillance data show that Canada is setting off a fourth wave of epidemics, and cases are developing along a strong upward trajectory.” She told reporters on Thursday.

Canada currently has more than 13,000 active cases, more than double the number in late July. Dr. Tan said that Canada reports 1,500 new cases every day, most of which are people between 20 and 39 years old.

“Fortunately, the death toll is still very low, an average of 7 people die every day.” She said, “We need to increase vaccine coverage for young people, and this age group has the most infected people.”

The previous wave of epidemics in Canada overwhelmed various hospital systems and caused a large number of deaths in nursing homes for the elderly. Relevant studies continue to show that widespread vaccination can provide more protection to people, prevent the infected from becoming severely ill, and also have resistance to the rapidly spreading Delta variant.

Ashleigh Tuite, an epidemiologist at the Dalarana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, explained to the Canadian Press: “This means that even if there are more cases in the population, it will not affect us. The health care system has had a serious impact. But this does not mean that we are out of the predicament.”

Many experts emphasized the need to maintain preventive measures such as wearing masks to avoid the worst possible consequences of this wave of epidemics, and at the same time continue to work hard to get as many Canadians as possible to vaccinate.
