The Government of Colombia Expels Diplomats from Argentine Embassy Over Insults to President Petro

The Government of Colombia announced the expulsion of a group of diplomats from the Argentine Embassy in Bogotá after the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, made derogatory remarks about Colombian President Gustavo Petro in an interview with CNN. Milei referred to Petro as a “terrorist murderer” and suggested that Colombia could follow in the footsteps of Venezuela or Cuba.

In response, the Colombian Government ordered the expulsion of diplomats from the Argentine Embassy in Colombia, citing damage to the nation’s confidence and offense to President Petro’s dignity. The decision was announced through a brief official statement from the Colombian Foreign Ministry.

The Argentine ambassador in Buenos Aires, Camilo Romero, confirmed that Colombia is exploring all measures in response to Milei’s comments. The current Argentine ambassador in Bogotá is Gustavo Alejandro Dzugala, appointed by the Kirchnerist Administration of Alberto Fernández.

Milei’s insults towards Petro have sparked reactions from Colombian political figures, with many expressing rejection and offense. The president of Congress, Iván Name, repudiated the disrespect towards President Petro, while Senator Humberto de la Calle condemned Milei’s insults as unacceptable. Senator Iván Cepeda stated that the Argentine president’s statements seriously offend the Colombian nation.

The decision to expel the diplomats has received support from some Colombian representatives, who believe it is important to defend the institutions of the country in the face of such insults. The tensions between Colombia and Argentina have been ongoing since Milei took office, with previous diplomatic measures taken in response to similar incidents.

This latest expulsion of diplomats from Colombia is not the first of its kind, as the country has previously taken similar actions against other nations. The Colombian government’s response to Milei’s insults reflects a commitment to protecting the dignity and sovereignty of the nation in the face of external attacks.
