Colombian senators mourn the death of the former president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera

The former president lost his life this Tuesday after the helicopter he was inside crashed in the Lago Ranco area, in the Los Ríos Region. This event puts an end to the life of one of the most important political figures in Chile.

Bogotá, February 6, 2024 (Senate Press). The news of the death of former president Sebastián Piñera in a plane crash that occurred this Tuesday caused shock not only in Chile but also in international politics.

The two-time president of the country (2010-2014 and 2018-2022) was traveling with three other people in a helicopter that crashed in Lake Ranco, in the commune of Futrono, Los Ríos region, located in the south of the country.

In Colombia, from the presidency of the Senate, Senator Iván Name Vásquez, made public his solidarity with the Chilean people by pointing out that the former president was “a friend of Colombia who worked for the integration of Latin America and generously accompanied the process of peace in our country.”

His colleague, Senator Jota Pe Hernández, Alianza Verde, expressed on his social networks: “The death of former Chilean president Sebastián Piñera in a plane crash is strong news. May his family have enough strength to face this hard moment RIP.”

“Former President Piñera was also recognized for his progressive vision and dedication to public service. He was an emblematic leader who promoted the economic and social development of Chile during his periods in office. His legacy will endure in the history of Chile and in the memory of those who knew him and worked with him,” states Senator Jaime Durán Barrera, of the Liberal Party.

The senator for the Liberal party, Mauricio Gómez Amín, also dedicated some heartfelt farewell words to him in which he emphasized his commitment to Colombia: “With deep sadness, we received the news of the death of the former president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera. We will always remember him for his constant willingness to help Colombia on multilateral issues, peace on his grave and all my solidarity with his family, his friends and the Chilean people in general.

Senator Berenice Bedoya, Independent Social Alliance, said: “From Colombia we regret the death of former Chilean president Sebastián Piñera, we send a greeting of strength to all the Chilean people and especially to the Family of the former president.”

Among the condolences was also that of Senator Antonio Zabaraín, of the Cambio Radical party, who commented on his account ; successful businessman and politician. He leaves an exceptional human being, he loses his family, Chile and the continent. Hug of solidarity to Cecilia and family.”

Senator María Fernanda Cabal, party for the Democratic Center, referred in the same sense, mentioning: “It is unfortunate news about the death in an accident of the former president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera. Solidarity with his family.”
