Colorful Hong Kong: Giant drone QR code shines in the night sky of Victoria Harbor
In just a few seconds, more than a thousand drones flying in the night sky of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor were arranged into a giant QR code, attracting spectators on the shore to raise their mobile phones to scan and get an introduction to Hong Kong. This is the first time Hong Kong has adopted this form to introduce itself to tourists from all over the world.
On the 28th, Hong Kong’s “18 districts are colorful day and night” campaign was officially launched. That night, the “Colorful Hong Kong” large-scale drone light show, guided by the Hong Kong SAR government and hosted by Bauhinia Cultural Group, was staged in Victoria Harbor to promote the image of Hong Kong as a city.
At about 7 p.m., citizens and tourists who came to watch the performance had gathered on Wan Chai’s waterfront. They were looking for the best seats to sit on this newly completed promenade in small groups, waiting for the lights to light up amid live music, chatter and laughter. The show begins.
Onlookers were amazed as rows of drones took off from the open space on the waterfront and flew over the sea. They formed various patterns with Hong Kong cultural characteristics, presenting a combination of technology, culture and art. A visual feast that attracted everyone’s admiration.
Everyone present took out their mobile phones to record the scene and guess what the next pattern would be. The drones first formed a world map, with the coordinates of Hong Kong shining brightly. Later, images such as Ocean Park, mountain cable car, AI intelligent robot, Cantonese opera actress, and neon signboards appeared successively, showing the unique charm of the Pearl of the Orient and expressing Hong Kong’s enthusiasm for welcoming tourists from all over the world.
The drone then “transformed” into an auspicious pattern of dragons and phoenixes to welcome the New Year, and then displayed the words “Dream Hong Kong, Charming City”, and finally turned into pieces of crystal clear snowflakes that slowly scattered, and instantly gathered into a giant two-dimensional QR code. At the end of the performance, the audience applauded, and someone said: “It’s more beautiful than fireworks.”
The reporter scanned the QR code to open the webpage and found that the webpage was titled “Colorful Hong Kong” and showed readers the Lunar New Year fireworks display, colorful food and toys shopping activities day and night, Hong Kong cultural events, international sports competitions and exhibitions and other Hong Kong events. “I came here specifically to watch it today. This is our first time to watch a drone show live. The atmosphere was very lively. I didn’t expect so many people to come to see it. When the dragon came out, I was shocked. It was a giant two-dimensional dragon. The way the code is presented is also very novel. It is a good thing for Hong Kong to have more ‘colorful’ activities now, which can attract more people to come to Hong Kong and get to know Hong Kong better,” Mr. Mo, a 33-year-old Hong Kong citizen, told reporters.
