Opposition Parties Request Annullment of Legislative Elections Due to Irregularities

Opposition parties Vamos, Nuestro Tiempo, and ARENA have filed an appeal for the annulment of the Legislative elections held on February 4, citing at least 69 anomalies during the electoral process and in the final count. They are asking for the elections to be repeated due to the irregularities of the process.

Claudia Ortiz, a deputy from Vamos, stated that the principle of not falsifying the popular will was violated in the elections and emphasized that asking for annulment is the right thing to do after the ballot counting process.

The results released by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) indicated that Vamos and ARENA obtained seats in the Legislative Assembly, however, the opposition parties still believe it is necessary to repeat the process.

In addition to requesting a repeat of the elections, the opposition parties are also calling for the recusal of specific judges and the dismissal or resignation of personnel of the Information Systems Unit (USI) of the TSE. They claimed that the electoral process is flawed and have documented 69 anomalies with supporting evidence.

The president of the ARENA party, Carlos García Saade, expressed that they will always be defenders of democracy and freedom and emphasized that irregularities were already denounced prior to election day.

The FMLN party also announced that it would present a brief to the TSE on Monday afternoon. The opposition’s call for the annulment and repetition of the Legislative elections comes ahead of the municipal elections on March 3.
