Condemnations against the Maduro dictatorship grow: Colombia and Brazil expressed concern about the elections in Venezuela

The dictator Maduro once again organizes elections tailored to his needs, with more and more voices being raised against a new electoral process tainted by irregularities in Venezuela. This Tuesday, the governments of Colombia and Brazil, close allies of the Nicolás Maduro regime, expressed their concern about the development of the electoral process in the Caribbean country.

The Colombian government, led by Gustavo Petro, expressed its concern about the difficulties that the Venezuelan opposition faced in registering their candidacies for the presidential elections on July 28. The Foreign Ministry of Colombia issued a statement expressing worries about the recent events that occurred during the registration of presidential candidacies, particularly in relation to the obstacles faced by major opposition sectors such as the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) and the Vente Venezuela Movement.

The PUD, the main opposition coalition in Venezuela, denounced that it could not nominate the candidacy of historian Corina Yoris, while Manuel Rosales, the current governor of the state of Zulia, was able to register at the last minute. Despite the controversies surrounding her registration, María Corina Machado affirmed that her candidate for the elections remains Corina Yoris.

The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need for a free, fair, and competitive presidential electoral process in Venezuela, calling for political and electoral guarantees for all political actors and urging compliance with the provisions of the Barbados Agreement. The Venezuelan dictatorship accused the Colombian government of committing “gross interference” in the electoral process.

The Brazilian Government also expressed concern about the development of the electoral process in Venezuela and stated that the impediments to the registration of Corina Yoris’ candidacy are not compatible with the Barbados agreements. Brazil stands ready to cooperate with the international community to ensure that the electoral process on July 28 strengthens democracy in Venezuela.

Despite rejecting statements from the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Chavista Foreign Minister Yvan Gil assured that Venezuela will carry out the elections without foreign intervention and thanked President Lula da Silva for his condemnation of the sanctions imposed by the United States on the Maduro regime.
