The German government plans to reintroduce the use of masks indoors to prevent coronavirus infections during the fall and winter. This was confirmed by the German Minister of Justice, Marco Buschmann, defining the measure as very probable.
“The effectiveness of masks for people in closed spaces is indisputable – the minister told the Funke group – For this reason, some form of mandatory use of the mask will certainly be part of our plan”.
For his part, the Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach, who is talking to Buschmann about the new regulations that will be contained in the Infection Protection Act (expiring on September 23), said in principle he was in favor of the return of masks. “We must take what awaits us in autumn and winter very seriously,” said Buschmann, hoping that the plan will be ready by the end of the month so that we can discuss it with the Lander authorities in August and have it approved by Parliament in September.
“In the ruling coalition we agree that there will no longer be general closures, school closures or confinements”, added the minister, deeming these measures “inadequate tools in the third year of the pandemic”. In Germany, the mandatory use of the mask on long-distance trains and airplanes remains in force at national level. Federal states regulate their use on buses or regional commuter trains, as well as in doctors’ offices and clinics.
