Damsel: the fantasy film with dragons that is back in fashion
In Damsel, Millie Bobby Brown will play Princess Elodie, promised in marriage to Prince Henry (Nick Robinson) of a very powerful kingdom. The young woman is convinced that she is heading towards a rosy fairy-tale destiny, but she will soon discover that the reality is very different: Elodie will in fact be delivered as sacrificial victim to a dragon, according to a cruel ritual that provides this terrible tribute every year. Obviously Princess Elodie has no intention of being torn to pieces so easily: she will begin to devise a plan to free herself and take revenge on those who deceived her. In the castle where she was led by deception, the girl will meet Prince Henry, due to her ambiguous conduct, and the wicked Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright from House of Cards), Elodie’s arch-enemy. The young girl, however, will be able to count on an unexpected ally: Lady Bayford (Angela Bassett), Elodie’s stepmother, who immediately sensed her trap behind the sudden wedding of her stepdaughter. The clash between the two women is guaranteed.
Damsel is the brainchild of Millie Bobby Brown herself, also a producer with her production company PCMA Productions, and by the actress’s firm will to carry out this project at all costs. The direction was entrusted to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, already behind the camera of 28 Weeks Later, while the screenplay bears the signature of Dan Mazeau, author among others of films such as Wrath of the Titans and the tenth chapter of the Fast & Furious. Filming on Damsel has been completed for several months now, with the release initially scheduled for October 2023. However, the debut of the film was postponed due to the actors’ strike which blocked Hollywood productions in the last months of 2022. Now finally the feature film will see the light: Damsel will be available exclusively on Netflix starting March 8, 2023a highly symbolic date to celebrate all female warriors.
Con Damsel, Millie Bobby Brown confirms herself among the most sought-after and influential young actresses of her generation. After the great successes of Stranger Things, Enola Holmes e Godzilla vs Kong, here she makes her debut as a fantasy heroine, dealing with a fearsome fire-breathing dragon to fight and kill. A role that is apparently more adult and distant from the beloved characters played so far, but which nevertheless reflects Brown’s versatility and crystalline talent, capable of ranging between genres with extreme naturalness despite her very young age (the British actress turned 19 last year February). For Millie, this is also the first time as a producer of one of her films, confirming how she has now become one of the most influential artists in Hollywood, capable of dictating the fate of her luminous career herself.
Damsel it fits into that fantasy genre populated by dragons, magic and enchanted kingdoms that has become forcefully back in fashion in recent years thanks to hugely successful TV series such as Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. This latest show with record ratings on HBO and Sky has brought the mythical fire-breathing winged creatures back into the spotlight, making us dream once again of knights, enchanted swords and sensational battles between men and dragons. In Damsel we find that old-time fantasy of the Lord of the Rings and Eragonwith Princess Elodie going on an adventure to save her life and defeat her terrible winged tormentor, a bit like Faramir, Eowyn and their army tried to take down the Nazgul and his mighty dragon in The Return of the King.
Who knows if this time too the dragon will prevail over the heroine of the film: will Millie Bobby Brown be able to brandish her sword (or any other weapon the screenwriters will make available to her) and get the better of the mighty fire-breathing beast? We’ll find out on March 8 on Netflix.
