Eric Carmen, frontman of the Raspberries and singer of hits such as “All By Myself” has died at the age of 74. His wife announced his death – the nature of which was not specified – on her official website.
“It is with immense sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the death of Eric Carmen. Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep this weekend. He took great joy in knowing that, for decades, his music touched so many people (…) Please respect the family’s privacy as we grieve,” she wrote.
The American singer had several huge successes in the 1970s and 1980s. After the Raspberries broke up in 1975, Eric Carmen launched a solo career. His first two singles were a hit in 1976: “All by Myself” – based on Sergei Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 – and “Never Gonna Fall In Love Again”.
Many of his songs would become huge hits when performed by other artists – Celine Dion covered “All By Myself” in 1996, Olivia Newton-John sang “She Did It” in 1977, and Shaun Cassidy exploded “That’s Rock and Roll.”
Eric Carmen also enjoyed immense popular success with his song “Hungry Eyes” for the film “Dirty Dancing” in 1987.
