Eid Al-Fitr Bathing Intentions Complete with Time and Procedures

Jakarta

Before Eid prayers, Muslims are advised to bathe. This is included in the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad.

Like worship in general, there are intentions that Muslims can recite before bathing on Eid. The evidence related to this practice relies on a hadith narrated by Ibn Majah.

“The Prophet SAW bathed on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.” (HR Ibn Majah)

Sunnah Eid Al-Fitr Bathing Intentions

The following are the intentions for Eid al-Fitr bathing as quoted from the book Complete Mandatory Prayer & Sunnah Guide by Ustaz Mukhsin Mather.

I intended to perform ablution for Eid al-Fitr, a Sunnah for God Almighty.

Arab latin: Nawaitul ghusla li ‘îdil fithri sunnatan lillâhi ta’âlâ

Meaning: “I intend to bathe to celebrate Eid al-Fitr as a sunnah because of Allah Ta’ala.”

However, when a person has a big hadith, then the intention pronounced is as follows.

I intended to perform the ritual ablution to remove the impurity except the takbeer, as an obligation for God Almighty.

Arab latin: Nawaitul ghusla liraf’il hadasil akbari fardlal lillaahi ta’aalaa

Meaning: “I intend to take an obligatory bath to remove major hadas, fardhu because of Allah Ta’ala.”

Eid Al-Fitr Bathing Time

Referring to Muhammad Baqir’s book, the sunnah bathing time for Eid al-Fitr is between dawn and the time of holiday prayers. However, the best time to bathe is just before leaving for the mosque or place of prayer.

In addition to bathing before praying Eid al-Fitr, Muslims are also encouraged to decorate themselves on Eid. For men, it is recommended to wear perfumes and clean clothes.

It is also sunnah to shave hair, cut nails, and remove unpleasant odors. Then say takbir when you leave the house and go to the place to perform the Eid prayer.

Procedures for Eid Al-Fitr Sunnah Bathing

The procedures for taking a sunnah bath on Eid al-Fitr are almost the same as the mandatory bathing in general. Here are more details,

  • Read the sunnah bathing intention first.
  • Clean your palms 3 times.
  • Clean the dirt stuck around the hidden places on the genitals with your left hand.
  • After cleaning your genitals, wash your hands with soap and rinse until clean.
  • Perform complete ablution movements like when going to prayer, starting from washing your hands to washing your feet.
  • Put your hands in the water, then between the base of your hair with your fingers until they touch your scalp. If so, splash your head with water 3 times. Make sure the base of your hair is also exposed to water.
  • Rinse the whole body with water. Starting from the right side then continue to the left side of the body.
  • Make sure all skin folds and hidden areas are cleaned.
  • After all the sunnah procedures for bathing have been carried out, both men and women can perform the Eid prayer.
