Eintracht Frankfurt can’t go beyond a draw against Werder Bremen. Although the Hessians counteract a deficit, they are still disappointed afterwards.
Standing still is going backwards – the situation at Eintracht Frankfurt can be summarized like this. Against Werder Bremen on Friday it was still enough to draw 1-1 (0-0) after being behind, but the second draw in a row is unlikely to satisfy anyone in the Hessians. Looking at the difficult remaining program, qualification for the European Cup is on shaky ground despite sixth place.
The Bremen lead through Milos Veljkovic (62′) was equalized by Tuta (77′), who was sent off with a red card shortly before the end (89′). Previously, Bremen’s Jens Stage had also seen the red card for a hard foul (74′).

Eintracht only drew against Bremen
Audio End of audio post
Coach Dino Toppmöller had to change his starting eleven against Werder compared to the 0-0 draw against Union Berlin: Fares Chaibi slipped into the starting eleven to replace Hugo Ekitiké, who was injured in the adductors, and Nnamdi Collins also celebrated his Bundesliga debut and replaced Ellyes Skhiri, who was out at short notice (calf problems ). Collins, 20 years old, a German junior international, moved from Borussia Dortmund to Frankfurt before the season, has only played for the U21s in the regional league and has impressed with strong performances there in recent weeks.
Collins took the position as right-back and, to say the least, did it properly. The real regular in this position, Tuta, moved further forward into defensive midfield instead of Skhiri. In addition, Philipp Max was preferred to Niels Nkounkou on the left.
Comments on Eintracht’s draw against Bremen: “We have to develop a different punch”

Few opportunities, a lot of idle time
Apart from the personnel changes, little changed in Eintracht’s game compared to the rest of the season, basically nothing. The hosts had more ball possession in the first half (56 percent), which was generally expected, but they found it difficult to pose a serious threat to score against Bremen who were deep. The marmot greets you every day! Although Max aimed well over the box early on (6′), Marmoush also shot straight at the goal from a tight angle (18′), but after that – as so often this season – there was a lot of idle time. The Hessians were too imprecise in their passing game, and also slow, and lost a few balls, especially in the center.
The guests from the Hanseatic city didn’t play any better. They limited themselves almost exclusively to defending – and yet they almost took the lead. After SV Werder’s only sensible attack in the first period, Stage failed due to Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp’s quick reaction (25′). Shortly before the break, Marmoush, who was, as is often the case, Frankfurt’s most striking attacker, had the opportunity to make it 1-0 (42′). He also shot at Werder keeper Michael Zetterer.
There are no penalties or sending off
The home team could have gotten a penalty straight after the restart. When he received a high cross, Bremen’s Amos Pieper warmly hugged Frankfurt’s defense chief Robin Koch, which was not a gesture of love in return. The referee didn’t blow his whistle and the VAR didn’t intervene (49′). On the other hand, Eintracht winger Eric Dina Ebimbe could have been sent off with a yellow-red card three minutes later, but here too the referee exercised leniency. Ebimbe sneaked off the pitch shortly afterwards and was replaced by his coach as a precaution.
And then it happened as it had to happen: out of nowhere, Bremen took the lead. Free kick, cross, shot, Trapp’s parade, Veljkovic’s save, 1-0 for Werder (62′). Eintracht coach Toppmöller reacted to the deficit with two changes and brought two regulars into the team with Nkounkou and Hugo Larsson.
Two expulsions: Stage and Tuta fly
Since the Bremen stage was sent off with a red card after a bad kick against Jean-Matteo Bahoya, who was also substitute, (74th), Frankfurt’s pressure now increased – and was rewarded. Tuta equalized with a header (77th), his first goal of the season. Ansgar Knauff missed the chance to take the lead just seconds later.
But then Bremen picked themselves up again – and were able to look forward to an injury time with an equal number. Goalscorer Tuta unnecessarily booted Bremen’s Felix Agu on the ankle and was sent off with a red card (89′). The inglorious end to another mixed evening from Frankfurt’s perspective.
