Delta has become the main strain spreading in the United States, accounting for about 80% of new cases. When it comes to this new strain, the unvaccinated public is a major problem, not just because they are more likely to be infected with this virus. Pekosz said that unvaccinated people in the community also give the virus a greater chance of spreading and mutating, which increases the risk of creating new variants that are better at infecting humans.

Pekosz said: “Replication in unvaccinated people makes the virus produce a whole set of variants. When a large number of people are infected and a large number of viruses are produced, the virus has more chances to mutate. Every interval Over time, these random mutations will give the virus the so-called’fitness advantage’, which means that it allows the virus to do something better, which allows it to spread among the population. Although Pekosz said that vaccines may be slightly less effective against these new variants, vaccination is still our number one tool against the virus, regardless of its form.

He said: “We know what is required for a vaccine to work against COVID-19. Even if the virus changes, we can adapt very quickly and keep the vaccine in sync with the circulating strain.”

“There is really light at the end of the tunnel. There really is a way forward. We just have to better and more effectively use the tools we now have to suppress this virus.”
