Farewell to French economist Jean Paul Fitoussi

The French economist Jean-Paul Fitoussi died in Paris. He was born in La Goulette on 19 August 1942. In recent months he had played an important role in the organization of the next Festival of Economics in Trento. Among other things, he was a professor at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris (Sciences Po) since 1982 and since 1989 he has chaired the French observatory on economic situations (Ofce). He was a member of the scientific council of the “François Mitterrand” Institute and since 2010/11 he has participated in teaching in International relations, Luiss’s first master’s degree in English.

His works concern inflation theories, unemployment, open economies and the role of macroeconomic policies. He has been a critic of the rigidity of budgetary and monetary policies, due to the negative effects on economic growth and employment levels. His recent works concern the relationship between democracy and economic development.

Fitoussi: Digitization will lead to an increase in inequalities

In one of his latest speeches, regarding the war in Moscow-Kiev, Fitoussi had argued that “Ukraine is Europe” and that “all European countries will suffer the consequences”. And then that, if a compromise is found that will satisfy Putin, “the European Union will pay more than everyone else” and “Moscow will have even more power over gas”.
