(LaPresse) The protesting farmers gave hay bale fire creating several fires outside the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels, as part of the ongoing mobilizations due to the excessive costs borne by them, the rules considered oppressive and the excessive bureaucracy. Police responded by using water cannons to put out fires lit by demonstrators. The EU leaders are in the Belgian capital to participate in a summit which will in any case be held in a different location from the one where the protests are taking place. The fires come following the arrival in the Belgian capital, in the early hours of the morning, of hundreds of farmers aboard heavy tractors.
The mobilization in Brussels comes at the culmination of weeks of protests across the European Union, including Italy. The protests have already had an impact before today: the European Commission yesterday announced plans to protect farmers from Ukraine’s cheap exports, but also to allow farmers to use some land that had been forced to lie fallow for reasons environmental.
