At least ten people died in a large fire that hit an inn on Avenida Farrapos, in the center of Porto Alegre, in the early hours of this Friday (26). The Rio Grande do Sul Military Fire Department mobilized five trucks to fight the flames in the three-story building. On social media, the corporation reported that the fire was under control.
“According to our commander of the 1st Battalion of the Fire Department, Lieutenant Colonel Lúcio Junes da Silva, ten victims were confirmed and the place was operating irregularly. Criminal expertise is on site to identify the victims and investigate the causes of the fire”, highlighted the fire department, in a statement.
The injured were taken to the Porto Alegre Emergency Hospital (HPS). Also on social media, Porto Alegre city hall reported that two people are in serious condition and six are undergoing minor treatment.

“With deep sadness I am following the investigation into the fire with victims at Pousada Garoa, in Farrapos. The priority now is to provide assistance to citizens rescued and sent to HPS. The city hall works to welcome residents and support the investigation of this tragedy”, posted Mayor Sebastião Melo.
In his profile on X, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, said that the fire causes deep consternation. “We remain mobilized in the aftermath of this tragedy and in identifying the causes of the flames. My condolences to the families of the victims.”
Agents from the Public Transport and Circulation Company (EPTC) monitor and guide traffic around the incident. In a statement, the Rio Grande do Sul Civil Police reported that the investigation is being carried out by the 17th police station, coordinated by delegate Daniel Ordahi.
“Steps are being taken and monitored with the fire department, Civil Defense, Military Brigade and General Institute of Expertise. The technical reports and results of other investigative investigations are awaited.”

On social media, the President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed sadness and concern at the number of deaths in the fire. According to him, the establishment welcomed people in vulnerable situations in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.
“My solidarity with the families and friends who lost their loved ones”, he posted.
