Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s 12-year prison sentence has been halved

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption and abuse of power was halved. This was established by the commission that has the power to commute sentences in Malaysia, after some corruption charges were dismissed at the end of 2023 against both Najib and other members of his party, the United Malay National Organisation.

Najib is 70 years old and was prime minister of Malaysia from 2009 to 2018. In August 2022 he was convicted of having embezzled 42 million ringgit (about 8 and a half million euros) from the 1MDB sovereign investment fund and having transferred it on your personal account. Najib, who immediately began serving his sentence, will be released in 2028. The fine that had been imposed on him was also reduced, from 210 million ringgit (about 40 million euros) to 50 (less than ten).

The scandal surrounding the sovereign wealth fund 1MDB, or 1Malaysia Development Bhd, had exposed a global network of fraud and corruption, one of the biggest financial scams of the last decade.
