Fortaleza wins in the debut of the Copa do Nordeste.

Fortaleza debuted against América-RN in the 2024 Copa do Nordeste. In a match played at Arena Castelão, Leão suffered but achieved an important victory in their debut against Mecão in a turnaround that culminated in a score of 2-1.

The best team in theory, Fortaleza proved to be a team with more improved technique in practice. Just 14 minutes into the match, Marinho hit goalkeeper Dida’s goalposts after a good pass pattern from the Tricolor team. However, taking control of the match in the first half was not enough for the home team to come away with an advantage on the scoreboard, as Marinho also wasted a good chance before the referee’s whistle.
Back in the second half, the visiting team balanced the match and managed to take the lead with Souza (around the 19th minute). Despite the disadvantage, Fortaleza quickly equalized the score: in the 22nd minute Lucero converted a penalty kick, 1-1.
With the score tied, the home team regained confidence in the match and turned the game around: Pochettino masterfully took a free kick and (counting on a deflection at the wall) put Leão ahead in the match. The goal scored in the final stretch of the match was the final goal and put an end to both teams’ debut in the regional competition.
Next Wednesday (07) Fortaleza turns its attention to the Campeonato Cearense, where it will face Ferroviário, a classic that will be played at Elzir Cabral at 8:30 pm. América-RN in turn will face Santa Cruz-RN in the Potiguar Championship, in a game scheduled for next Thursday (08) at 3:00 pm.
