Eintracht Braunschweig continues its high flight in the 2nd Bundesliga under new coach Daniel Scherning. Lower Saxony won the important basement duel against 1. FC Magdeburg on Sunday thanks to a goal from Ermin Bicakcic with 1:0 (1:0).
With their fourth win in a row, BTSV moved past Hansa Rostock into 16th place in the table and moved within three points of Magdeburg. The saving bank is within reach, the next opponent Schalke is tied on 15 points.
“This will be a highlight game for the team, for us as a coaching team, for the club. 63,000, the hut will be full, our fans are also happy and will support us loudly. I’m in a positive mood,” Scherning told NDR with a view to the game on Saturday (1 p.m., in the live center on >) against the struggling Gelsenkirchen team.

Scherning decided not to make personnel changes on Remembrance Day in German football and trusted the same team that had beaten the top team Holstein Kiel the previous week. No hesitation, no feeling around, Braunschweig got straight to the point – and to opportunities. In the fourth minute, however, with the help of the opponent, when Magdeburg’s Amara Condé almost steered the ball into her own goal while trying to clear a Braunschweig corner. The header whizzed just past the far post.
Bicakcic celebrates in the fifth attempt
The home team presented themselves in an intense game, strong in the duels and extremely dangerous in the transition game, the lead after a good quarter of an hour was therefore well deserved: The FCM had the majority in their own penalty area, but simply couldn’t get the ball out of the ball after a throw-in the danger zone. Braunschweig’s shots on goal were blocked four times, and central defender Bicakcic was finally able to celebrate on the fifth attempt – 1-0 (16th). “The goal shows what sets us apart: resilience, not giving up, going after the second and third balls with all our might,” explained Scherning.

The Lower Saxony team remained in control, striker Rayan Philippe was denied by FCM keeper Dominik Reimann in the 21st minute. On the other hand, Ron-Thorben Hoffmann was only tested a few times after half an hour, when the visitors’ offensive scored for the first time. However, the leadership was not really in danger.
BTSV outnumbered in the final phase
Not even at the beginning of the second half, Magdeburg’s flow of the game didn’t want to establish itself. After the break, ex-HSV coach Christian Titz’s team didn’t record a single shot on goal. The “Lions” defended confidently when it was necessary and repeatedly scored pinpricks on the counterattack.
The motivated Lower Saxony team also benefited from the fact that they had the advantage in the final phase after Daniel Elfadli (74′) was sent off for yellow and red. Shortly before the final whistle, Johan Gómez had the opportunity to make a preliminary decision after a through pass from Niklas Tauer, but narrowly failed (84′). In the end it was a deserved 1-0 win for the Scherning team. “I wanted a second goal, we had the opportunity to do so. We certainly didn’t play our best game under me, but I’m happy to take even the slightly worse ones as a win,” said the coach.
