The Birmingham club were favorites to win the rematch in the 4th round, but things don’t always go as you think in sports. Chelsea led 2-0 at the break after goals from Conor Gallagher and Nicolas Jackson.
Gallagher was central in the first match between the teams as well, and the attacking midfielder was mighty ruthless when he smashed the ball into the net after eleven minutes played. Ten minutes later, Chelsea doubled their lead when Jackson scored with a header.
The 3-0 scoring was of the beautiful kind. Enzo Fernandez melted the ball straight into the crossbar on a direct free kick from around 25 metres.
Moussa Diaby reduced the score for the hosts in extra time.
– This was exactly the reaction we wanted and needed. All credit to all the guys,” Chelsea full-back Ben Chilwell told ITV.
– We like pressure and get better from it. The confidence in the dressing room before the match is the best I have experienced, and the unity. We delivered on the pitch and everyone at the club needed that today.
