From the EU green light to dried yellow meal worms as food

by admin

BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) (ITALPRESS) – Member States have approved a proposal from the European Commission allowing the use of dried cornworms as a novel food. Following a rigorous scientific evaluation by the European Food Safety Agency, this is the first real authorization to place insects as novel foods on the EU market. This novel food can be used as a whole dried insect as a snack or as an ingredient in numerous food products, for example as a powder in protein products, biscuits or pasta products. The Farm to Fork strategy identifies insects as an alternative protein source that can support the EU’s transition towards a more sustainable food system. Millions of people already consume insects every day. Furthermore, the FAO qualifies insects as a healthy and highly nutritious food source, rich in fats, proteins, vitamins, fibers and minerals. The formal decision of the Commission will be adopted in the coming weeks. (ITALPRESS). ads / com 04-May-21 16:39
