Gaza, MSF head of mission speaks: “It’s heartbreaking to witness all this”

«The bombings are very close to the hospital. We feel the shooting, the helicopter rockets, the heavy artillery. Day and night. It’s difficult to get used to it because every time I ask myself: in this bombing, how many children will have died? How many women, how many civilians? How many will lose some family members and how many will remain amputees?”. The testimony of Leon Cans, head of mission of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in the Gaza Strip is dramatic.

Leo Cans is at the Nasser hospital, in the city of Khan Younis, the second largest town in the Strip where the most intense fighting is taking place. On Tuesday evening he sent a message. «The situation is catastrophic. There was an air attack (January 15) 150 meters from the hospital entrance that killed eight people and injured more than 80. Two children, aged 4 and 5, died. According to MSF surgeons, the Israeli army had not sent evacuation orders before bombing the area near the al-Nasser hospital (the largest in operation in the entire Strip). Last night Leo Cans managed to send the replies with audio messages. It wasn’t easy, because there has been no electricity in the Strip for six days and the Internet and telephone lines have not worked.

Since the bombings of January 15, has the situation worsened further?

The situation gets worse with each passing day. Because here, every day, more and more injured people arrive and the healthcare facilities are not sufficient for an emergency
such.
