Chiquita’s largest ripening facility in Europe was inaugurated yesterday in Cortenuova, in the province of Bergamo, within the GI.MA.TRANS logistics hub. Massimo Cocchi, Provincial Councilor, industry partners and company customers were present at the event. Joop in ‘t Veen, Ripening & EME Transportation Manager at Chiquita, highlighted: “This new center reflects our commitment to innovation, quality and sustainability in the banana distribution sector. Strategically positioned in Italy, it represents a commitment to excellence for our consumers and our business partners.”

The facility has 24 two-level ripening cells, with a capacity of 48 pallets each, 2 packaging lines producing up to 45 trays per minute and ample storage space. The cells use the most advanced cooling technologies to ensure optimal ripening conditions with efficient dehumidification. Packaging takes place in a temperature-controlled area to maintain the freshness of the bananas. With docks on both sides, Chiquita has optimized daily operations, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.

Stefano Quarti, CEO of GI.MA.TRANS, commented: “We are honored that Chiquita has chosen GI.MA.TRANS as a partner for its first ripening center in Italy. This warehouse lot dedicated to the ripening of bananas, part of the 15,000 m2 currently built in Cortenuova, allows us to respond to the needs of the product and expand this collaboration, including controlled temperature transport”.

The opening of Chiquita’s new Ripening Center strengthens the logistics and distribution of its bananas in Italy, bringing benefits to the local economy with the creation of new jobs and promoting sustainable industrial practices to reduce environmental impact and promote a of healthy living.
