Fiery from the golden core.

The band’s sound is right up there with the newer ones Enslaved, but there are several layers here. They are located in a dark musical swamp where melancholy and a nature-based atmosphere sound in the room during playback. And they sometimes sound rough, disheveled, deep, the record is really something for itself.

I tried to experience the songs in a very varied way, the ones that were perhaps not completely secured in the first rounds, became one of the favourites. This applies in particular Tåkeheimen. Here the band plays with heaviness and a very cool use of voice. The title cut was, however, what really grew, but it was both a favorite at the start and ended up right there when the album had spun its times.

A year was centuries such as snippet/intro and over to Ginnungagap stands as a great solution. Thorn up against the title cut too, that transition won me over! Cosmos burner– the song has a development that I find interesting, how it builds, how you are slowly won over. However, what made me go deeper into the song was the break at 02:27, then I realized that this one was special. And on this and Army of the Dead is there a perhaps a small taste of Purified In Blood? If you listen Under the Black Sky from there, there are actually some similarities. A compliment.

Maybe had Golden Core dressed to have more speed and thrash riffs in their music, it was a thought I had sometimes, but at the same time these heavy or mid-tempo solutions are what create the overall experience.

The vocals are here and there, a little rough, some growl, a little scream, clean in a dark form, there is a lot of variation in the vocal use. And there is a lot of variety in the guitars, they are used cleverly to both be down in beautiful landscapes and the next moment unleash the madness. And as a drummer, I’m impressed by the simple structure that sounds so big and rich. You hear that the rhythm is adapted to the songs, the music, it is not an attempt to brief, but to create what is needed to optimize the songs. I don’t know if it’s deliberate, but that’s how it’s perceived here.

A great album, progressive, dark, something core, some black edges, you get a lot here. I really don’t understand why more people haven’t discovered the band.

8/10
