LONDON. A definitive ‘no’ to the UK neutral passport comes from the Supreme Court which has reiterated the need to indicate one’s gender as male or female. The appeal by Christie Elan-Cane, a transgender activist who has been involved for years on this front, was thus also rejected by the British court of last resort.
He asked to be able to identify himself as belonging to a third “gender X” on the passport, considering the current male-female distinction as “inherently discriminatory”. But a judge of the Supreme Court reiterated the need to indicate the gender for legal purposes, as the other details on the identity document are specified.
