The Norwegian Church’s highest democratic body, the Church Assembly, elected Harald Hegstad (64) as leader of the Church Council on Friday. As leader of the church council, he is now the top elected leader of the Norwegian Church for the next four years.

Hegstad believes that the Church of Norway can mean something very special in a time characterized by contradictions and conflicts.

– The gospel of peace and reconciliation in Jesus Christ more important than ever.

The newly elected leader of the Church Council elaborates: – As a folk church, The Norwegian Church has a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of society and individuals. It will be an open church for all who need it, in joy and in sorrow.

One of the most meaningful things I can think of

Making an effort for the church is one of the most meaningful things I can think of, says Harald Hegstad.

He takes on the role of church council leader, with a long career in the church as a theologian, elected official and church researcher behind him. Now he looks forward to leading the Church Council’s work for the next four years.

– As leader, I want to emphasize finding unifying solutions and cooperation across differences of opinion.

This is how the election took place

The election took place during the Church Meeting in Trondheim – the annual meeting which is the highest democratic, representative body in the Church of Norway. The meeting is referred to by some as “the Church’s Storting”.

There were two candidates for the election during the Church meeting. Harald Hegstad received 60 votes, and Gard Sandaker-Nielsen received 55 votes. There were no blank votes.

– I am grateful for the trust from the Church Council, and look forward to leading the Church Council’s work for the next four years, says the new Church Council leader.

The church meeting consists of 117 members: the members of the country’s eleven diocesan councils, head of the Sami Church Council, head of the Norwegian Church’s youth committee and president of the bishop’s meeting.

Harald Hegstad (b. 1959) has been elected from the Nomination Committee’s list, from Oslo. He takes over the leadership post from Kristin Gunleiksrud Raaum, who has led the Church Council since 2016.
