Hong Kong to vote, but can only elect candidates who have passed the test of pro-Beijing patriotism

BEIJING – More than an election, a selection, as many of the activists who fled abroad called it. Today Hong Kong goes to the polls to choose the new Legislative Council, the parliamentary member of the former British colony. And it will be a different vote than there have been so far: for the first time only the candidates (153) who have proved to be “true patriots” have been able to present themselves.
