The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate from April to June was 4.7%, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points from the value of 5.1% in the previous three months (ie, from March to May), and an average of 4.9% in the past three years. The underemployment rate fell from 3.5% to 3.0%, with a three-year average of 2.6%.

Among the sectors that were hit hard by the epidemic earlier, the unemployment rate of the catering service activities industry fell from 11.0% reported last month to 8.6%, the retail industry fell from 7.4% to 6.6%, and the accommodation service industry was unchanged from the previous month. reported 5.7%.

In addition, the unemployment rate in the financial sector was last at 2.3% (2.2% in the previous month), while insurance and real estate reported 3.1% (2.8%) and 3.0% (2.8%) respectively.

The latest total employment in Hong Kong was 3.572 million, an increase of 17,800 month-on-month, while the total labor force was 3.750 million, an increase of 5,000 month-on-month, marking the first rebound in the 12-month losing streak.

Overall unemployment (not seasonally adjusted) fell to 179,000 from 191,000. Median monthly household income recorded HK$27,000 in May, up HK$100 year-on-year.

Looking ahead, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Sun Yuk-han said: “As local economic activities continue to recover, the labour market is expected to further improve in the short term, but the magnitude of the improvement will depend on the local epidemic and global and local financial conditions.”
