(LaPresse) New volcanic eruption in the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland. This is the third to occur in the region in a few months and the sixth since 2021. The eruption began after intense seismic activity at 5.30 am local time. The previous eruption began on January 14 and lasted about two days, with lava flows reaching the outskirts of the city of Grindavik. It is unclear whether the lava will reach Grindavik this time too. Last November, Icelandic authorities began building dams to divert lava flows away from homes and critical infrastructure. Iceland, which sits above a volcanic hotspot in the North Atlantic, averages an eruption every four to five years. The most disruptive one in recent times was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed huge clouds of ash into the atmosphere and led to widespread airspace closures over Europe.
