According to the US Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC), on Friday, during the “Davos Agenda” (Davos Agenda) video conference of the World Economic Forum, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgier Kristalina Georgieva told the media reporter that the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant means that the CCP’s policy of “zeroing out” is no longer effective.
Georgieva said the “restrictions that need to be implemented are more of a burden on the economy” and pose more risks, not only affecting China but the rest of the world.
China’s “Zero-COVID” policy refers to attempts to completely eliminate the virus through public health measures such as lockdowns, mass testing and border quarantines.
Georgieva noted that with the emergence of Omicron, two years after the outbreak, all countries must now reassess how they are handling the outbreak. As far as China is concerned, it is unlikely that the latest wave of the epidemic can be contained with a “zero” policy without serious economic impact.
She also said that further steps can be expected as “pandemic policy” remains the top economic policy for China and the rest of the world in 2022. But “unless we build protections globally” people will continue to see disruptions to jobs and services and “the future will not be as bright as we would like”.
