Infections, hospitalizations and deaths are increasing in Germany among the unvaccinated, which still represent a significant slice: 66.23% of the population was immunized with a double dose and 68.87 received at least one dose. If the pandemic situation worsens, Germany could introduce restrictions only for the unvaccinated. “Further restrictions are possible for those who are not immunized,” federal government spokesman Steffen Seibert said. The measures, he added, will be evaluated by the federal states, while “no one is planning further restrictions” for vaccinated people.
Merkel worried
Chancellor Angela Merkel, the spokesman said, considers the current data and the increase in the occupancy rate of hospital beds “very worrying” but every decision, he concluded, will be taken by the Laender Health Ministers’ Conference and the Minister federal Jens Spahn which will take place on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 November.
The numbers on the rise
“In the last 24 hours there have been 194 deaths with and for Covid, a week ago there were 114” was the alarm raised by the president of the German institute Robert Koch, Lothar Wieler, during a press conference in Berlin. The cases surveyed were 20,398. The weekly incidence was the highest since May. In Germany, Minister Spahn said, there is a “pandemic of unvaccinated people” and “it is huge”. Spahn hoped that the government would put in place stricter control measures, for example on Green Passes which, he said, are often not asked for in public places where possession is also required in order to access. The minister cited the Italian example: “I personally experienced it in Rome: on the occasion of the G20 I happened to have to show the vaccination certificate more often in one day than perhaps here in four weeks”. In some regions of Germany “ICU beds are running out again.”
Avoid the overload of hospitals
