Putin underestimated Ukrainian resistance: both that of the military and that of civilians. A week into the war, Moscow recognizes that 498 soldiers have died and 1,597 wounded. Probably the losses are higher but this admission already documents how serious the Kremlin’s mistake is: too many casualties for the one presented as “a peace operation in the Donbass”.
