Bathing before Eid prayers is not obligatory, but it is sunnah. Even so, the Prophet advised his people to bathe first before Eid prayers.

Bathing before Eid prayer aims to purify oneself physically and mentally before facing Allah SWT.

A big bath before this holiday is recommended in the morning at dawn, as was done by the Prophet SAW in the following hadith.

“The Prophet Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam bathed on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.” (HR. Ibn Majah)

When the body is pure and clean from hadas big, of course it can provide comfort and tranquility in worship.

According to Imam al-Ghazali in a treatise entitled al-Adab fid Din and Majmu’ah Rasail al-imam al-Ghazali, bathing before the Eid al-Fitr prayer is not bathing as usual.

Because, there is a reading of the intention that begins the bathing ritual by dousing all parts of the body from head to toe with water.

Intention to bathe for Eid prayer

Before starting a bath, a Muslim must intend first. The intention to bathe before Eid prayer can be expressed like this:

I intended to perform ablution for Eid al-Fitr, a Sunnah for God Almighty.

Arab-latin: Nawaitul ghusla li’idil fithri sunnatan lillahi ta’ala.

Meaning: “I intend to bathe to celebrate Eid al-Fitr/Eid al-Adha as a sunnah because of Allah Ta’ala.”

Procedures for bathing for Eid prayer

After making the intention, a Muslim can continue to bathe according to the Eid al-Fitr prayer bathing procedures as follows:

  • Read the prayer to enter the bathroom by stepping with your left foot first, then your right foot.
  • Read the intention of bathing for Eid prayer: Nawaitul ghusla li’idil fithri sunnatan lillahi ta’ala.
  • Continue spraying the body parts from the right then to the left.
  • Then splash your entire body from top to bottom with running water.
  • After that, start cleaning the folds of the body one by one, from top to bottom.
  • Don’t forget to clean between your fingers and toes so they are evenly exposed to water.
  • After that, continue with the usual bathing steps until you are completely clean, such as washing your hair, using body soap, face wash, and even brushing your teeth.
  • Before leaving the bathroom, it is recommended to perform ablution as usual with the intention of praying for Eid al-Fitr.
  • Lastly, leave the bathroom while reading a prayer.
  • Prayer after bathing is mandatory

    Reciting the prayer after the obligatory bath is sunnah to complete the series of junub baths. The sound of the prayer is the same as the prayer after ablution.

    I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Oh God, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves.

    Asyhadu allaa ilaaha illallah wahdahu laa syariika lahu. Asyhadu anna Muhammadan Abduhu wa rasuluhu. Allahumma-j alnii minat tawabinna waj alnii minal mutathohiirina waj alni min ibadati shalihin.

    Meaning: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and there is no one to associate anything with Him. And I bear witness that the Prophet Muhammad is His servant and His messenger. O Allah, make me a person who repents, and make me a pure person and make me I am from the group of pious people.”

    That is the reading of the intentions and procedures for bathing for Eid al-Fitr prayers. By bathing in Eid al-Fitr prayers, a Muslim is expected to be able to carry out the Eid prayer in a pure condition physically and mentally. Eid Mubarak.
