Fasting comes from the word shiyam or fasting which means to restrain. According to the term, fasting means refraining from anything that breaks it, such as drinking, food, etc., starting from dawn (fajr) until sunset.

Quoted from the NU website, the meaning of fasting according to Rasyid Ridha Al-Manar is as follows.

Abstaining from eating and drinking, and having intercourse with women from dawn to sunset, out of hope from God and preparing the soul and preparing it for strength. May God bless you and raise your will.

Meaning: Refrain from eating, drinking and sexual intercourse, from sunrise to sunset (Magrib) because we hope for Allah’s pleasure and prepare ourselves to fear Allah by means of muraqabah (feeling that Allah always cares for you) accompanied by educating your will and desires.

Before fasting, reading the intention is something that must be done. Without intention, fasting will not be valid. In a hadith, Rasulullah SAW said that fasting without prior intention at night is considered invalid.

Procedures for reading fasting intentions

There are things that must be considered when reading fasting intentions, as follows.

1. Time of intention

The intention to fast during Ramadan is done before dawn (Fajr). Intentions can be said after the Isha’ prayer or during sahur time, before Imsak time arrives.

Even so, there is a slight difference in time in reading the intention to fast for Ramadan. According to the Shafi’i School, the intention to fast must be done every day on the eve of Ramadan.

Meanwhile, according to the Maliki School of thought, it is enough to read the intention on the first night of Ramadan to fast for the whole month so there is no need to renew the intention every day on the grounds that fasting in Ramadan is a single act of worship, citing the MUI page.

2. Awareness and sincerity

In the context of worship, intention is a decision to do something directed only to Allah SWT. Make sure the intention of fasting is done with full awareness and sincerity, remembering that the main purpose of fasting is to worship God.
