On March 8, women and girls all over the world took to the streets to protest against oppression – including in Hamburg. In the evening there was a demonstration in the city center.

A broad alliance of Hamburg initiatives and organizations called for this. 5,000 participants were registered. Not that many came, but a few hundred people gathered at the town hall market to demonstrate for women’s rights. Already in the afternoon there was a protest organized by the Kulturbrücke Hamburg against discrimination against women at the Gänsemarkt.

Fegebank: International Women’s Day continues to be important

International Women’s Day is an important day even after more than 100 years, said Hamburg’s Second Mayor and Equal Opportunities Senator Katharina Fegebank (Greens). Because there are still injustices between the sexes, for example in terms of pay. Fegebank: “There has to be an awareness for 365 days that we want to live equally, self-determined and free in this society – and that’s worth fighting for every day.”

Violence against women is a concern

Fegebank is concerned about the increase in violence against women. It was only on Thursday that it became known through the Senate’s response to a request from the Left that 13 women were killed by their partners or ex-partners in Hamburg last year.

The German Federation of Trade Unions pointed out that women with a migration background are particularly disadvantaged – for example in the labor market.
