Iraq ended its impressive performance in Group D of the 2023 Asian Cup Iraq vs Vietnam with a 3-2 win over Vietnam, Wednesday night (24/1/2024).
The Iraq vs Vietnam match which was held at Jasssim Bin Hamad Stadium produced dramatic moments, including red cards, own goals and penalties.
Reporting from the-afc, Vietnam appeared persistent in achieving victory so that they still have a chance of advancing to the round of 16.
This hard effort was reflected when in the 16th minute, they managed to break through Iraq’s goal through Zaid Tahseen’s own goal, although this goal was disallowed after a VAR check due to Khuat Van Khan’s offside.

Iraq responded quickly and in the 38th minute, Zidane Iqbal fired a dangerous kick which was blocked by Vietnam goalkeeper Nguyen Filip.
However, in the 42nd minute, Bui Hoang Viet gave Vietnam a 1-0 lead after using a pass from Khuat Van Khang.
This momentum had to be paid dearly by Vietnam when Khuat Van Khang received a second yellow card in the 45+4 minute after a clash with Merchas Ghazi.
With only 10 players, Vietnam entered the second half with a 1-0 lead.

Iraq took advantage of the situation, and in the 48th minute, Rebin Sulaka equalized 1-1 with a header after a corner kick from Ali Jasim.
The lead turned around in the 73rd minute when Aymen Hussein scored against Vietnam after receiving a pass from Mohanad Ali Kadhim.
In the 81st minute, Iraq was awarded a penalty after Bui Hoang Viet’s foul on Youssef Wali.
However, Aymen Hussein fired a penalty kick which hit the post, keeping the score at 2-1.
Vietnam provided a surprise by equalizing the score at 2-2 through Nguyen Quong Hai’s goal in the 90+1 minute.
However, drama occurred in the 90+11 minute when Iraq received another penalty. Aymen Hussein, who previously failed, this time succeeded in carrying out his task well, breaking through Vietnam’s goal.
The final score of 3-2 confirmed Iraq as winners of Group D with 9 points, while Vietnam returned home without winning points in 3 group matches.
