Designer, fashion expert and businesswoman Iris Apfel, considered a style icon, died at the age of 102 on Friday night (1st). The death, whose causes were not revealed, was confirmed by Apfel’s official social networks.

She became known worldwide at the age of 84, in 2005, when she was invited to manage an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The exhibition “Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Apfel Collection” launched Apfel beyond the New York scene.

In 2015, the designer’s story was told in the 2015 documentary “Iris”. Apfel was also the subject of books, campaigns, magazine covers and other works, such as accessory and jewelry lines.

Born in New York in 1921, her professional history took shape when in 1950 she started her own business in the textile sector with her husband, Carl Apfel, with whom she was married until her partner’s death in 2015. The luxury textile company Old World Weavers has had clients such as cosmetologist Estée Lauder and even the White House.

Apfel, who had 3 million followers on Instagram, published her biography titled “Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon” in 2018 and a Barbie doll was created in her likeness the same year.

Apfel created his “trademark” with his eccentric and irreverent style of dressing, almost always wearing glasses with large lenses and black frames, and clothes that were experiments with various styles.
