Israel bans her from entering Gaza, Albanian (UN): “Tel Aviv’s response is not binding, I will go anyway”

He will not be able to enter Israel or Gaza, Francesca Albanese. The Israeli Foreign and Interior Ministries announced that they had decided to deny entry to the UN special rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories following “his outrageous claims that ‘the victims of the October 7 massacre were not killed for their Jewishness but in response to Israeli oppression’”. Albanese, who took up the post in 2022, had informed Israel in early January of his intention to carry out his first field mission in Gaza next month.

“I wrote to the Israeli authorities and also to Egypt since I intended and intend to enter the Strip through Egypt (Rafah crossing, ndr) therefore I do not consider Israel’s response binding and therefore I will proceed with my mission on the field”, declares Albanese al Done immediately after learning of the Israeli “niet”. “I want to underline, however, that this response does not surprise me because for the last 17 years Israel has also prevented my predecessors from accessing Gaza. Nor is it surprising to me that Israel used some of my remarks during a conference shortly before I became rapporteur to justify its illegitimate decision not having jurisdiction over the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian side.”

The UN official believes that “Israel, despite knowing that Gaza can be entered from Egypt, he turns a blind eye to accuse me of things I didn’t say and divert attention from the catastrophe it is causing in Gaza where the 70 percent of the victims are women and children. Furthermore uses my reflections to accuse the UN and UNRWA of complicity with Hamas. But I have never supported Hamas.” According to Albanese, the Israeli authorities stigmatize a comment he made on a statement by the French president Macron on the anti-Semitic nature of October 7th. “I, however, believe that this is not the specificity of October 7th”.

In his book published two months ago with an unequivocal title I accuse – written before the Hamas pogrom against Jewish Israeli civilians – Albanese brought together the content of his International Reports (presented respectively in October 2022, July and October 2023) in which he tried to document the affirmation of a conditions of apartheid and neocolonial occupation with thousands of victims. International law, which Albanese says is his compass, considers the Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the West Bank to be a single territory.
