Israeli police admit: child killed by mistake in attack on checkpoint

Israeli police have admitted they accidentally killed a four-year-old Palestinian girl while trying to neutralize the man driving a car who crashed into a checkpoint in the West Bank. According to what has been reconstructed, the vehicle with a man and a woman on board accelerated near the checkpoint in the city of Biddu, slightly injuring a young border police officer. The police immediately opened fire, killing both occupants of the car, but the shots also hit a vehicle traveling behind and inside which the little girl was. She was seriously injured and was declared dead shortly after by rescuers who rushed to the scene.

Herzog: resettlements from Gaza? This is not Israel’s position

Resettling Palestinians outside Gaza is “not officially” Israel’s position. The Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, said this to NBC News, commenting on the statements of some members of the government. Forced displacement from the Strip is “absolutely not” Israel’s position, but he added that “in a society where freedom of speech is the basis of our DNA, people can say what they want.” Herzog said officials “were talking about voluntarily abandoning the Strip, but I say openly, officially and unequivocally that this is not the Israeli position.”

Washington Post: US fears Netanyahu wants to extend war to Lebanon

The White House fears that the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, wants to start a real war against the Lebanese Hezbollah group for political gain. The Washington Post reports it, citing some American officials. “If the Gaza war ended tomorrow, Netanyahu’s political career would end with it. This motivates him to extend the conflict,” they say. Netanyahu, the newspaper recalls, dropped drastically in the polls after the start of the war with Hamas and Israeli public opinion accuses him of the failures, in terms of defence, which allowed the attacks and massacres of 7 October. “The prime minister will continue to take the necessary measures to protect Israel and its future,” an Israeli official commented when WP asked whether Netanyahu is making military decisions based on his own political calculations.

Rockets from Lebanon towards northern Israel, IDF responds

Around eight rockets were fired from Lebanon and fell near the Israeli army’s ‘Astra’ position on Mount Hermon. The Jerusalem Post reports this, citing the Israeli Defense Forces IDF, which responded, hitting the places from where the launches were carried out. Another missile, The Times of Israel reports, hit a building in the largely evacuated northern town of Metula, causing damage but no injuries. Other rockets fired towards the area fell in open areas.

Save the Children, 10 children amputated a day in Gaza

More than 10 children a day, on average, have lost one or both legs in Gaza since the conflict began three months ago. This was reported by Save the Children, reporting in a note that since 7 October, according to Unicef, more than 1,000 children have had one or both legs amputated. Many of these operations – the NGO recalls – were carried out without anesthesia, due to the paralysis of the health system in the Strip caused by the conflict and the serious shortage of doctors and nurses and medical supplies such as anesthetics and antibiotics, according to the World Organization of Health (WHO).
