Isuzu Motors Limited and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have signed a partnership agreement based on the decision to entrust Honda with the development and supply of the fuel cell system for the fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck that Isuzu intends to present to market in 2027.
Isuzu and Honda believe that fuel cell technology, using hydrogen as a fuel resulting in zero CO2 emissions, will be effective in achieving carbon neutrality of heavy trucks which are required to deal with large load capacities, extended use, driving long distances and the need for quick refueling.
Since signing an agreement in January 2020 to conduct joint research into heavy-duty trucks using fuel cells (FC) as a powertrain, the two companies have worked to establish a foundation for core technologies such as ensuring compatibility of fuel cells and trucks trucks and the development of vehicle control technologies.
The two companies are currently planning to begin demonstration testing of a prototype truck on public roads before the end of the current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2024). Taking full advantage of the experience and knowledge gained through joint research, the two companies will continue to make progress in developing products that meet the required performance and conditions for heavy trucks and satisfy customers.
