Laura Castelletti she is the first female mayor in the history of Brescia. In the evening, with just over 50% of the sections scrutinized, the centre-left candidate appears in front of the Loggia, seat of the city council, to kick off the celebrations.
“This result is the result of the good governance of these ten years. It is a thrill to be the first female mayor of Brescia, it is a satisfaction to have won in the first round. The city has given a clear indication of the way forward”: were the first statements by the one who was the deputy mayor of the city for ten years. The gap is wide: Castelletti is well above 50%, followed by the centre-right candidate, Fabio Rolfi, who stops at just over 40%.
The mayor takes over the baton from Emilio Del Bono, who in 2018 won in the first round with 53.8% of the votes. For the second round of elections in a row, the elections in Brescia end in the first round. And one of Castelletti’s first thoughts is for Del Bono: “A great administrator and a significant presence for me in this electoral campaign”. The mayor reiterates the role of the team in the result of the centre-left (without 5stelle which in Brescia competed with the PCI and the Unione Popolare, stopping below 3%): “I’m not a single woman in charge. There was a very strong teamwork and it will continue to be there”. “I hope that the institutions do their duty – he added -. It is good that the Region and the Government do a quick reset and make themselves available to the people of Brescia, not to myself. We are people capable of planning, of carrying out projects not there must be hostility. I hope it was just an unpleasant electoral moment” Castelletti replied to those who asked about the promises made by the representatives of the national government and the Region who had come to Brescia in support of Rolfi. “I have also been called ‘Ztl mayor’ and ‘radical chic’. When there are no ideas, we move on to offenses” the new mayor replied on this point, removing a few pebbles from her shoe. Great disappointment in the centre-right house (where FdI is the first party, followed by the Rolfi list and with the League under 9%) which only brought all the big names to Brescia on Friday, starting with the premier Giorgia Meloni in the city to support Fabio Rolfi’s race.
“Defeats hurt, but the city must be listened to” is Rolfi’s first comment. “I am very happy with the work accomplished and done in these months of work, we have strengthened the civic presence of the centre-right and now the goal is to build an even more convincing proposal for the next five years”. Certainly “we need to continue the commitment to raise the turnout – concluded the former regional councilor -: we have not managed to sufficiently motivate the voters who have a center-right orientation but who have once again decided to stay at home”
