Angelina Mango is competing for Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö and is one of the favorites. The 23-year-old singer explains in an interview what her title “La Noia” means to her.

von Margarita Ilieva

What makes you feel the most “la noia” (bored) in your life?

Angelina Mango: I don’t really have much boredom in my life. But I think that “La noia” helps me find within myself what I really need. “La noia” is about being happy and trying to always smile, even when something bad happens to you. So for me, “La Noia” is something that helped me a lot, and that’s what I try to do with other people when I sing the song.

So you’re not exactly trying to escape the feeling?

Angelina Mango: To escape boredom? No! Definitely not. I want to find meaning for the boredom in my life every day. Because in our time there is no boredom in the world. Everyone runs and does something, or if you have a few minutes, you take out your phone and watch something. I just need some time to breathe and think.

You grew up surrounded by music. Have you always had the feeling that this was your path in life too?

Angelina Mango: I’ve always played music. I’ve been a songwriter since I was a child. And for me there was no question, it was normal. And when I finished my high school diploma, there was this question: What do I do now? What should I do? I was a songwriter and I made it, that’s all.

Italy seems to have a tradition of sending young and successful artists to the ESC. You are now one of the bookmakers’ favorites for the final. What does that do to you?

Angelina Mango: It is a great honor to follow in the footsteps of my colleagues that I truly love – from Måneskin to Marco Mengoni. It’s a responsibility for me, but I don’t want the whole bookmaking thing to put any kind of pressure on me. I just want to leave it to people’s love and it gives me more confidence on stage – nothing more (laughs).

What’s next on your musical bucket list?

Angelina Mango: I don’t have many things on my bucket list in life. I just try to live each moment with a natural instinct. I like to “program” everything, but not my music. And for me, music changes with me. I may change in the future, I don’t know. But at the moment and in my next project, I am very real as a personality. My new album will be released on May 31st and I’m really looking forward to it!

Can I introduce myself. Is there more cumbia music on the album?

Angelina Mango: I won’t tell anything! (laughs) It will be totally Angelina.

Why was a cumbia beat the right choice for your ESC contribution?

Angelina Mango: Cumbia was a dance that people in Mexico and Colombia danced to fight against the bad moments. And I think it fits the message of the song very well. That’s why I think it’s important in this competition to give people a positive message. And that’s why I strongly believe in my song and in cumbia – because it has a positive message. The competition doesn’t matter, the message to people does.

If you had to choose one: rap or reggaeton?

Angelina Mango: Rap. Because in rap I’m very inspired to write music. I don’t know why, but I found a lot of inspiration in rap music. And reggaeton is an inspiration for my body and I’m always dancing, but I can also always dance to rap music.
