It’s Alfons Schuhbeck’s birthday and he’s celebrating in prison

Alfons Schuhbeck (75) was once a celebrated chef, stars and high society loved him, but there is not much of the glamor and fame left. Instead of cooking for the national team or Hollywood stars, the self-made man has fallen deeply: Since August 23, 2023, he has been in prison for tax evasion worth millions. A circumstance that is unlikely to change so quickly, three years and two months are scheduled.

And so today’s 75th birthday will probably not be the last that he has to spend in prison. But how did the fallen celebrity chef spend his special day?

Alfons Schuhbeck: This role is played on his birthday in prison

Basically, explains a former prisoner “Bild”newspaper, the rule applies: “Everything personal that could be reminiscent of a bourgeois past is excluded by the prison administration. This also includes birthdays.” Prison boss Monika Groß also confirms this to “Bild” and explains that there are generally “no special amenities or anything similar” for birthdays. A prisoner, including Schuhbeck, would not be surprised by prison staff with a birthday cake. But do the same rules apply to celebrity chefs?

Do the same rules apply to Alfons Schuhbeck in prison?

Apparently yes, because the star chef, who is incarcerated in the Rothenfeld correctional facility near Andechs in Bavaria, is said not to have even been allowed out on his birthday. It is not known whether the Bavarian received at least a visit from his children, who perhaps surprised him with a cake. If not, there are still his fellow prisoners who are said to be very fond of Schuhbeck and would even have the opportunity to buy the birthday child a small chocolate cake complete with candles in the prison shop.

With a bit of luck, it would be entirely conceivable for Schuhbeck to receive a little special treatment from the prison staff on his birthday, explains defense attorney Tom Heindl (47), but that depends on Schuhbeck’s relationship with the guards.
