We had the wolf moon in January, then the snow moon in February. Monday March 25, 2024, a new full moon, which will be completely full at 8:01 a.m., will illuminate the sky with its round whiteness and it has a rather unusual nickname: in fact, place at the worm moon.

But don’t expect to see an earthworm (sky?) appear on our satellite during this period! Indeed, the worm moon is just a nickname among the 12 or 13 awarded at full moons every year.

Where does this nickname come from?

Everything comes from a work, The Old Farmers’ Almanac. This has such an influence that even NASA uses it. So, what does this March full moon have to do with the earthworms swarming in the earth?

The Old Farmers’ Almanac answers that “for many years we thought the name referred to the earthworms that appear when the soil warms in the spring.”

These worms invite robins and other birds to feed, which is a true sign of spring!

He wrote that the name “worm moon” refers to another kind of “worm” – beetle larvae – which begin to emerge from the thawed bark of trees and other winter hiding places around this time.
