Overseas Network, June 28th According to Japan’s “Tokyo Shimbun” report on the 28th, the Fukushima nuclear accident produced a large amount of nuclear waste, most of which were stored in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. This batch of waste is not only huge in quantity and diverse in variety, but storage equipment is also aging, and its leakage risk is increasing.

According to reports, the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant produces sludge containing high-level radioactive substances when processing nuclear sewage. Tokyo Electric Power currently stores the sludge in approximately 3,300 special containers. At the beginning of June, Nobuhiko Ban, a member of the Japan Atomic Regulatory Commission, stated that according to the commission’s calculations, 31 of the containers had exceeded their expiration date, and another 56 containers would reach their expiration date within 2 years. He urged TEPCO to replace these containers as soon as possible.

Not only that, there are about 85,000 containers containing nuclear waste in the Fukushima nuclear power plant. They are placed in the open air for a long time. One of the containers leaked in March and some radioactive materials flowed into the ocean. The nuclear waste in the container is mainly rubble and used protective clothing. Tepco plans to dispose of it through incineration and crushing. However, the most critical incineration facility failed during trial operation. It was originally planned to start operation in March. Postponed for one year.

In addition, the earthquake risk of the Fukushima nuclear power plant is also increasing. From February to May 2021, earthquakes occurred continuously in Fukushima and its surrounding areas, and six nuclear sewage storage tanks in the Fukushima nuclear power plant leaked. The durability of these storage tanks’ waterproof materials is 5 years, but nearly 10 years have passed since they were completed and put into use. TEPCO’s staff will conduct inspections 4 times a day to confirm whether they are leaking. (Overseas Wang Xiluo)
