(Borussia Dortmund – Atletico Madrid 4–2, aggregate 5–4) For the first time since Jürgen Klopp, Borussia Dortmund can cheer for the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Tuesday 16 April at 23:45

The short version

  • Borussia Dortmund progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League after beating Atlético Madrid 4–2 (5-4 on aggregate).
  • The first time Borussia Dortmund has reached the semi-finals since 2013, then under the leadership of Jürgen Klopp.
  • Norwegian national team defender Julian Ryerson was involved in the 1–0 goal.
  • The semi-final will be played against PSG, who knocked out Barcelona.
  • Borussia Dortmund turned the game around twice along the way and won in the end. Marcel Sabitzer was the match winner.

Sea view

– Pure madness, writes Bild after the violent drama in Dortmund.

Norwegian national team defender Julian Ryerson set the tone with the first shot in the highly entertaining quarter-final. Lyngdølen cheered wildly for Borussia Dortmund’s first semi-final in the Champions League since 2013.

Back then, Klopp led the club all the way to the final. There was a loss for Bayern Munich in an all-German match at Wembley. Two semi-finals now await against PSG, who crushed Barcelona 4-1 away from home.

– It was extraordinary, says Dortmund director Hans-Joachim Watzke.

For Atletico Madrid, the decline was correspondingly enormous.

– Death, resurrection, death, is the title of the newspaper AS.

– This hurts, says Atletico captain Koke.

Both Marcel Sabitzer (Dortmund) and Álvaro Morata (Atletico) missed great chances before things really took off at Signal Iduna Park.

  • 1–0: Ryerson involved in the foreplay. Mats Hummels serves a cream pass through to Julian Brandt. He tapped the ball under Jan Oblak in the Atletico goal.

Ian Maatsen – the Chelsea full-back who arrived on loan in January – made a crucial mistake as Dortmund lost the first leg of the quarter-finals 2-1. Now the Dutchman retaliated strongly.

  • 2–0: Maatsen was played through by Sabitzer. From roughly the same position as he put the ball clink down by the post. His first goal in the Champions League.

But after a break – certainly due to the intense battle with coach Diego Simeone – Atlético Madrid came back with a vengeance. They pushed hard from the start in the 2nd half.

  • 2–1: Mario Hermoso headed a corner back towards the goal. It said Mats Hummels. The Dortmund nestor was unlucky. Put the ball in own net.

The Argentine Rodrigo De Paul dominated most of the game and soon Atletico almost pushed the home team into their own goal.

  • 2–2: Substitute Rodrigo Riquelme’s shot was narrowly saved by Dortmund goalkeeper Kobel. Then another substitute, Ángel Correa, got his chance. He eventually scored on his own rebound.

Borussia Dortmund seemed driven. But that was not true at all. And in the center mostly like Marcel Sabitzer. The turnaround was violent.

  • 3–2: Sabitzer found Niclas Füllkrug inside the box. The header was in the farthest corner.
  • 4–2: Marcel Sabitzer sorted it out himself. The Austrian’s shot found its way through a forest of Atletico legs and into the back of Jan Oblak in the Atletico goal.

– It killed us, says Atletico’s Koke to Movistar.

Dortmund had thus once again reversed the quarter-finals. The football party took off for 80,000 at Iduna Park. The Madrid club’s dream of one Champions League-triumph was once again crushed.
