Lawyers wait for the ICC to issue an arrest warrant against Maduro

International Criminal Court Expected to Issue Arrest Warrant Against Venezuelan President Maduro

Internationalist lawyers María Alejandra Aristeguieta, William Cárdenas Rubio, and Blas Imbroda are hopeful that the International Criminal Court (ICC) will soon issue an arrest warrant against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. These legal experts shared their insights during a forum organized by the Geopolitical Observatory of Latin America (OGAL), led by former Caracas mayor Antonio Ledezma.

The forum focused on the ICC’s investigation into Maduro and top officials in his government for alleged crimes against humanity. The lawyers expressed optimism following the rejection of an appeal by Venezuela to halt the investigations, allowing British prosecutor Karim Khan to proceed.

The investigation, initiated in November 2021, centers on crimes committed during the 2017 opposition protests against Maduro’s government. It includes allegations of political persecution, imprisonment, torture, and sexual violations by civil authorities and military personnel.

María Alejandra Aristeguieta highlighted Maduro’s ongoing challenges to the ICC’s reports, including the expulsion of human rights officials, the arrest of activists, and the murder of a former Venezuelan military officer in Chile. The lawyer emphasized the importance of expediting the judicial process and ensuring accountability for those implicated.

President of the International Committee against Impunity, William Cárdenas Rubio, detailed the long history of legal actions against Maduro dating back to 2003. He noted the support of six member states of the Rome Statute for the ICC investigation into crimes committed in Venezuela.

Blas Imbroda, a lawyer before the ICC, underscored the lack of rule of law in Venezuela and the resistance of high-ranking officials to accountability. The legal experts anticipate significant developments in the case and the issuance of arrest warrants in the near future.

The rejection of Venezuela’s strategies by the Appeals Chamber signals a potential path towards universal justice and accountability for crimes against humanity. As the legal proceedings unfold, the international community will be closely following the developments surrounding the investigation into President Maduro.
