Dubai to Build New Terminal at Al Maktoum Airport with Capacity for 260 Million Passengers
[NTD News, Beijing time, April 29, 2024] The Dubai authorities have announced their plans to invest nearly US$35 billion in building a new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, as the city’s main airport, Dubai International Airport, cannot be expanded due to its central location.
Once fully operational, the new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to accommodate up to 260 million passengers per year, making it the airport with the largest passenger throughput in the world. The area of the new terminal will be five times the size of Dubai International Airport.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, took to social media to confirm the plans for the new terminal, stating that Al Maktoum International Airport will become a key player in Dubai’s aviation industry.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, director of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and chief executive of Emirates Airlines, stated that the first phase of the construction plan will be completed within 10 years and will be able to accommodate 150 million passengers per year.
Dubai International Airport currently handles up to 120 million passengers annually, but its location in the city center limits opportunities for expansion. In contrast, Al Maktoum Airport, situated on the outskirts of the city, has the potential to become the new main aviation hub in Dubai.
The UAE government has expressed its support for the project, emphasizing the significant boost it will provide to the country’s aviation industry and economy.
